Tzahar region, Israel

The Tzahar region is located in the upper Galilee, in the North of Israel. It contains Tzfat, Rosh-pina and Hatzor. Tzfat, is one of the oldest cities in Israel, its old city is well preserved and is beautiful to look at. Rosh-pina was founded in the end of the 19th century and Hatzor, in the middle of the 20th century. Those places are pretty small (Tzfat is the biggest and it has about 30,000 settlers) but they are still very good to live in. Tzfat has more than 200 synagogues spread all around the city, you can actually see the combination of the new age and modern life, with the old life style and the Jewish tradition. This area is one of many others all around Israel, which take part in many different programs that involve teenagers.

Palm Beach County, Florida, USA

The Jewish community of Palm Beach is one of the strongest and wealthiest Jewish communities in the world. There are many active youth groups in the area that are based around the Kaplan Jewish Community Center, The Jewish Federation of Palm Beach, and The Commission for Jewish Education. Teenagers come from all over the community to gather every Wednesday night at the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy for Judaic Institute sponsored by the commission. There they learn the different aspects of Judaism as well as meet new friends. J.I. helps form a very close knit Jewish community of youths all over the county. The Federation is very involved with international Jewish relations and is the sponsor of many different programs (like this one) around the world. Palm Beach County is the foundation of the creation of a more united international Jewish community.

Saint Petersburg, Russia

Saint-Petersburg……. What are the first associations : white nights, ‘north palmira’ , cultural capital of Russia….. But we will write about Saint –Petersburg not according to these statements. We will talk about Jewish Saint-Petersburg.

Many famous Jews lived there. So we can say that they create their own special atmosphere of the city. The most special about those people is the way they mixed the Russian high culture with their Judaism. That means they don’t give up the attributes of the Russian cultural world as: art, theater, ballet, intellectual studies of those issues and of history, philosophy, sciences and so on. But at the same time they united all those with their Jewish every day life and studies. Some of them discovered their Judaism through divine and holiness that comes from the art but most of them develop that by studying history philosophy and “halacha”. During the hard communist times there also was a large group of brave people who continued following Jewish traditions although that was forbidden. Nowadays there are a lot of activities and programs connected to Judaism and many people take part in them: sochnut programs such as: naale, sela and halom, holidays, youth club, summer camps, hesed organization, “beit hellel”.
