Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
This majestic three-volume encyclopedia, abridged from a 30-volume
set in Hebrew and with a foreword by Elie Wiesel, chronicles Jewish
life before and during the Holocaust. Arranged alphabetically by town,
thousands of entries explore centuries of Jewish life. Some entries,
particularly for large cities, provide information on Jewish residents
as early as the Middle Ages and discuss the fate of Jews during the
Black Death persecutions (1348-1349) and various pogroms from the 17th
to 20th centuries. Each entry provides vital information on the town's
Jewish inhabitants on the eve of German occupation gives the dates of
Jewish roundups and mass executions and estimates how many Jews from
that community survived the war. Except in very rare cases (as with
Copenhagen), the survival statistics are horrifying. But the encyclopedia
offers more than statistics: the numbers come to life through more than
600 black-and-white photographs, most of which are from the archives
of Israel's Yad Vashem museum. Here we see the vibrancy of Jewish life
before the war, kolkhoz theater groups and swing bands, weddings and
riotous Purim parties, shops and synagogues. Several of the photographs
depict Jewish military units from WWI; others show Jewish young people
looking bored in chemistry class or diligently trying to master the
violin during orchestra practice. A final 56-page section entitled "In
Memoriam" provides unforgettable, haunting photographs of the Holocaust
itself. This three-volume set is a required acquisition for libraries
and anyone interested in Jewish studies.

COHEN, JACK
Major philosophers of Jewish Prayer in the twentieth century. -
New York: Fordham University press, 2000.
Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Arguing that for many people prayer is not a relevant activity, Cohen
(Guide for an Age of Confusion) presents nine Jewish philosophers who
sought an intellectual base for prayer. Their thinking includes rationalism,
moral action, and prayers' function. The philosophers born earlier in
the century are more aligned with the orthodox movement than those born
later, who are here tied to more liberal movements. Still, Elie Munk's
and Abraham Kook's philosophies are as unique as those of their liberal
colleagues Eugene Borowitz and Lawrence Hoffman. One chapter discusses
feminists' views of prayer, and the last chapter poses the question
of prayer's relevance. Cohen shows that prayer is neither a recent concern
nor a greater concern for one movement's philosophers than it is for
another's. Rather, philosophers from each movement confront it as a
part of their thinking. This thoughtful, general summary is concerned
with stimulating readers to think about prayer. Readers interested in
philosophy and theology, as well as those wishing to learn more about
spirituality, will enjoy this book. Recommended for public and undergraduate
libraries.

Israel and
a Palestinian State: Zero sum Game / Edited by Arye Stav - 2001. 530

Editorial Review
This collection of articles, appendices and documents deals with different
aspects of the establishment of a Palestinian state in the Western Land
of Israel, thus reducing Israel to the borders of June 4, 1967. This
initiative, known as "the peace process", involves a paradox
where a minuscule democracy is being forced to provide to its totalitarian
enemies - scores of times its size - the only thing that it lacks: territory.
In exchange, these dictatorial regimes promise to provide the one and
only thing that they lack: peace.
The essence of the current process is the establishment of an Arab-Palestinian
state in addition to the on that already exists in Jordan, this time
in Eretz Israel, beginning with Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, the cradle
of the Hebrew nation and the raison d'etre of Judaism and Zionism.

Home Lands: Portraits of the New Jewish Diaspora. -
New York: Henry Holt and Co., 2001. 336 p.
From Publishers Weekly
The new Jewish Diaspora of a "heterogeneous people who thrive in
secular societies" is here to stay, asserts Boston Globe journalist
Tye (The Father of Spin). As these diverse Jewish communities have become
not merely way stations but enduring homes, they have begun to remake
Judaism itself. Tye tells this intriguing story through sketches of
people and of life in seven cities. In Dsseldorf, he finds an
Orthodox rabbi invoking a more pluralistic Judaism to educate Russian
refugees. In Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, a fervent Lubavitcher Hasidic
rabbi has energized a dormant community. In Buenos Aires, a Jewish polity
fragmented by economic setbacks and anti-Semitic attacks has begun to
revive with new models of worship and organization. In Paris, Ashkenazi
and Sephardic Jews have forged ties that could serve as a model for
their fractious brethren in Israel. Tye's chapter on Dublin, where the
Jewish community is dying, may at first seem anomalous, but, he argues,
their determination to reestablish their "Gaelic brand of Judaism"
elsewhere is a testament to the ability of Jews to survive wherever
they may be. His two American chapters focus on Boston, where the Jewish
community has fused learning, spirituality and social justice, and Atlanta,
where rival denominations work with considerable amity. Yet Tye's optimism
might have been better contextualized by a broader survey. Though the
author understandably had to winnow his examples from many compelling
possibilities, readers may wonder about Jewish communities in such places
as Melbourne, Montreal and Johannesburg. While not a breakout book,
Tye's presentation of a new Diaspora may intrigue a broad Jewish audience.

Rosenthal,
Steven T.
Irreconcilable Differences?: The Waning of the American Jewish Love
Affair with Israel. -
Hanover and London: Brandeis University Press , 2001. 231 p.
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Until the 1970s, American Jews and American-Jewish groups avidly supported
Israel, via political lobbying of the U.S. government and financial
contributions to the Israeli government and other institutions. Yet
in most cases, explains Rosenthal, who teaches history at the University
of Hartford, "the Jewish state has had relatively little effect
on the religious and cultural life of American Jews"; rather, it
served as a comforting source of identity for those in the Diaspora.
With balance and clarity, Rosenthal charts the gradual erosion of the
"black-and-white morality" that characterized Middle East
politics (and the outlook of American Jews) through the Six-Day War
of 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Israelis were becoming more
divided on both political and religious issues, and, he argues, the
country's halo slipped with its 1982 invasion of Lebanon, its embrace
of American-Jewish spy Jonathan Pollard, its militaristic response to
the Palestinian intifada and its acceptance of only Orthodox conversions.
Rosenthal is sympathetic, for example, to the mission of the group Breira,
which in the 1970s strived "to legitimize public dissent within
the American Jewish community," though he is also critical of its
"self-righteousness and lack of empathy" for the fears of
many Jews. While Rosenthal sees a gulf between liberal Americans and
nationalist Israelis, he also believes that Americans can and should
support pluralism and tolerance in Israel. More firsthand accounts would
have enlivened the book, which draws almost exclusively on secondary
sources, though it remains a thoughtful, accessible study.

From Library Journal
Each of the ten chapters in Rosenthal's (history, Univ. of Hartford;
The Politics of Dependency) study touch on key issues, such as the Pollard
affair, the intifada, and the "Who Is a Jew?" controversy,
in the relationship between American Jews and Israel. The author examines
the evolution of the relationship over the decades, arguing that the
unquestioning support American Jews once had for Israel has eroded and
that crucial tensions exist today. Israel, now a modern power rather
than a fledging nation, is no longer dependent upon the unblinking support
of American Jews, who are consumed with immediate concerns (such as
the issues raised by the high degree of intermarriage) at home. Many
readers might nevertheless argue that the American Jewish community
still plays a powerful role, however, and its support, while evolving,
remains essential. This clearly written, if controversial, book, will
best be appreciated by informed readers who have background knowledge
of the subject. Recommended for libraries with strong Jewish studies
collections. Paul Kaplan, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., IL
