Israel Experience FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a program suitable for me?

There are so many programs to choose from. Your first step is to look at this web site under the category that fits your needs, ie., high school programs during the summer etc. Click through the different programs and read the information. If you still need some assistance, contact the Shaliach closest to your community. The shaliach or Israel program director will direct you to an appropriate program and provide you with the necessary information and registration forms.

Is there financial assistance available?

Yes. Most organizations provide some financial assistance, or they can direct you to other organizations which might be able to help. Each community will have different applications and requirements. Sometimes it is based on need and sometimes on merit, or both! Check with your Shaliach, your Jewish Federation and/or the sponsoring organization directly.

What is the itinerary of an "Israel Program"? What will I see?

Most Israel programs are oriented toward touring the whole country from the south to the north. Groups are taken to both the historical and modern sites while hiking, swimming, and learning about Israel. Some organizations or movements have a specific focus on learning, sports, religion, nature etc. You need to choose the program goals that suit you best. See What is an Israel Experience"

Are all programs religious? What is the difference in observance between the many youth movements?

There are religious programs and there are nonreligious programs. When you read the program information, it should explain the religious expectations of the program participants. If it is not stated, feel free to ask either the organization directly or the Shaliach. The Orthodox, Conservative and Reform movements all sponsor programs to Israel. They all observe religious practices on different levels. You do not need to be affiliated with any particular religious denomination or youth movement in order to participate in a program.

How will I deal with leaving home?

Most often a trip to Israel is the first time a young person separates from his/her family and friends for an extended period of time. Don't worry, you can do it! We all do it and live through it! This will probably be the first of many times that you will be away from home, so you can look at it as good practice!

You will see that most kids are experiencing the same feelings. Once you get to know the group and make new friends you will feel very secure in everything you are doing and experiencing. The group will support each other through the hard times and this creates everlasting friendships! Don't worry! It's a wonderful challenge!

What if I get sick?

The program provides Health Insurance for all participants. In addition, a medic accompanies the group on all trips and medical help is available at all accommodations. If specific problems arise, the group director or counselor will make the appropriate arrangements.

How do I get mail and stay in touch with my family and friends?

You will be given an address before you leave home that you can distribute to your family and friends. Also, public phones are available and you can always call your family collect! But, hopefully they will write you!

What security and safety precautions are taken for the group?

All safety precautions meet the standards required by the Police Department, the Society for the Protection of Nature as well as the Security division of the Jewish Agency. In addition each and every group has a medic and an armed guard during all trips.

What should I take with me?

The group/organization should provide you with a list of items to bring. In general, the summers are warm. Lots of shorts, sandals, bathing suits, hats, water bottles, a camera etc. Nothing fancy. In the winter, it gets cold! So think about bringing sweaters, jackets etc. For specific questions, contact the organization or the shaliach.

Do Israelis speak English?

Most Israelis speak English. You shouldn't have a difficult time communicating.

Will I have free time?

Most programs allow free time in the big cities as well as a free weekend to spend with an "Israeli family" or with friends.
